i want to extend my love and prayers to cathy’s family and to ray, and to everyone who found her dear and indespensible. cathy was a wonderful friend to me for 27 years, since we lived across the hall in the dorms from each other at Loyola.

i wanted to share a dream i had of cathy a few years ago. in the dream, she was teaching me how to make an art project . she said “you need chewable ink, which is very strange! it is liquid when you put it in your mouth, but chew it around a bit and it becomes like gum. black gum. it tastes really good. you can get it in different flavors, like black licorice or dark chocolate. when you can blow a bubble with it, then it’s ready. and there is a handmade rice paper that works best. lay the paper out on to the floor, and wash your feet in this bowl so that they are clean. now take the ink out and apply it to the bottom of your feet. then walk on the paper. it looks like large calligraphy brush strokes. and the mysterious thing is, every time, you will write out a beautiful poem in another language with your feet, without even knowing you are doing it. ”

this dream reminded me of so many things that i love about cathy. how she savored things both light and dark. how she waited and “chewed” on things til the material and time was right. how she trusted the process and how art and poetry couldn’t help but be created, just in her daily walk. how she loved the unusual method, the mystery. and how she delighted in gently sharing these skills with others.

i am really aching with missing her, as i know we all are and will be always. and i feel her with me too, in her own unique way. love, teresa
